Elbow dysplasia is a collective term for developmental elbow conditions in dogs that cause chronic pain and lameness, and is strongly influenced by breeding decisions.
Elbow dysplasia causes chronic pain from a young age. Dogs with untreated or poorly managed elbow dysplasia experience life-long discomfort affecting exercise, play and quality of life. The condition has a strong hereditary component, and breeding decisions - screening parents and avoiding affected dogs in breeding programmes - are the most powerful tool.
