Respiratory disease is the leading cause of mortality in housed beef cattle during winter, but ventilation design, vaccination and stocking density management can substantially reduce its impact.
Respiratory disease causes significant suffering including laboured breathing, fever, depression and death. Many cases arise from the stress of housing and mixing at the start of winter combined with poor air quality. Good building design including natural ventilation, lower stocking densities, and all-in/all-out management reduce incidence.
