Tail docking in pigs is widespread but does not address the root causes of tail biting, which include inadequate enrichment, overcrowding and nutritional deficiencies.
Tail biting causes acute pain, blood loss, and secondary infection that can reach the spine. While tail docking reduces the severity of biting injuries, it is itself a painful procedure that addresses symptoms rather than causes. The root cause is frustrated exploratory and rooting behaviour. Providing adequate enrichment - particularly straw - is the evidence-based solution.
