Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common conditions in older cats, and nutritional management is a cornerstone of slowing progression and maintaining quality of life.
CKD causes progressive deterioration in quality of life through uraemic toxin accumulation, nausea, weight loss and dehydration. Nutritional management - particularly phosphorus restriction and improved hydration - slows disease progression and reduces clinical signs. Palatable renal diets and appetite stimulants are key welfare tools for keeping CKD cats comfortable through their disease.
