Modern pig genetics has focused heavily on production traits, but welfare-relevant traits including stress susceptibility, disease resistance and temperament can also be selected.
Genetics fundamentally shapes welfare - a pig's capacity for pain, stress, disease resistance and social behaviour is partly heritable. Breeding programmes that incorporate welfare indicators alongside production traits can produce pigs that are both productive and better able to thrive. This is a long-term but powerful lever for industry-wide welfare improvement.
