Cattle Fly Control and Summer Welfare

Fly challenge in summer causes significant welfare impact in cattle through irritation, reduced grazing time, skin damage and transmission of disease.

Key Facts

Horn flies can reach densities of thousands per animal, causing significant blood loss
Face flies feed around the eyes and nose, causing irritation and spreading pinkeye
Warble fly larvae migrate through cattle causing significant pain and tissue damage
Pour-on insecticides, fly traps and ear tags provide effective fly control
Shade and access to water reduce heat stress associated with fly-driven bunching

Welfare Considerations

Fly burden in summer cattle represents chronic irritation and distress. Heavily fly-challenged cattle spend more time bunching, less time grazing, and may develop secondary infections. Individual welfare is directly improved by effective fly control - clearer eyes, undamaged skin, better body condition and reduced stress responses.

What You Can Do

Use integrated fly management including insecticides and physical barriers
Provide adequate shade and water to reduce stress during fly season
Advocate for fly management to be included in cattle welfare assessments
