Snow leopards are mountain predators from Central Asian high altitudes, and creating appropriate environmental conditions in zoos requires attention to temperature, space and terrain complexity.
Snow leopards are challenging to keep in zoos given their environmental requirements and solitary, shy nature. Cold, dry climates, complex terrain with elevation, and the ability to retreat from human view are essential welfare requirements. Zoo facilities that meet these needs demonstrate that snow leopard keeping can be welfare-positive; those that do not should be encouraged to improve or transfer animals.
