Chronic exposure to urban noise pollution causes measurable stress and welfare impacts in dogs, with physiological and behavioural indicators of chronic stress linked to noise environments.
Noise pollution is an underrecognised welfare issue for urban dogs. Unlike acute fear responses to fireworks, chronic low-level noise creates persistent background stress that affects sleep, behaviour and physiology. Providing quiet retreat spaces, reducing exposure through timing of walks, and addressing chronic anxiety through enrichment and sometimes medication improves welfare for noise-sensitive urban dogs.
