Feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) establishes lifelong latent infection in cats, causing recurrent eye and respiratory disease that requires long-term management to minimise welfare impact.
FHV-1 causes recurrent bouts of eye pain, nasal congestion and ulceration throughout a cat's life. Cats with severe recurrent disease experience significant welfare impact from chronic discomfort, reduced vision and breathing difficulty. Management focuses on reducing stress triggers, prompt treatment of recurrences, and antiviral therapy when corneal involvement occurs. Stress reduction is the most important long-term welfare intervention.
