Immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) in cats causes rapid, life-threatening red blood cell destruction that requires emergency treatment and long-term immunosuppressive management.
IMHA causes acute welfare crisis as the immune system destroys red blood cells faster than they can be replaced. Affected cats deteriorate rapidly from lethargy to collapse. Emergency transfusion and immunosuppression save many cats, but intensive monitoring and long-term medication are required. Quality of life assessment throughout treatment guides decisions about continuing or changing therapy.
