Pig Farrowing Crate Alternatives Research

Research into alternatives to farrowing crates is producing promising results, with pen designs that protect piglets while allowing sow movement now commercially available.

Key Facts

Several loose farrowing systems including PigSAFE and UPenn pen have been tested extensively
Piglet mortality in well-designed loose systems is comparable to crate systems
Sow welfare is substantially better in loose farrowing with freedom to turn and nest build
Training of sows in loose farrowing is important for successful adoption
Consumer and retailer demand for crate-free farrowing is growing in welfare-sensitive markets

Welfare Considerations

Farrowing crate alternatives have moved from research concept to commercial reality. Well-designed loose farrowing systems that incorporate anti-crush rails, piglet escape areas and nest building opportunities achieve welfare benefits for sows without sacrificing piglet survival. The challenge is now scaling adoption through economic support, farmer training and market incentives.
