Cattle Rotavirus and Coronavirus Calf Welfare

Rotavirus and coronavirus are major causes of calf scours in the first weeks of life, causing significant welfare harm and mortality that is largely preventable through vaccination and hygiene.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Rotavirus and coronavirus scours cause severe dehydration, weakness and death in young calves. Maternal vaccination 3-6 weeks before calving produces colostrum rich in protective antibodies that, when consumed adequately, protect calves through their most vulnerable period. Combined with good hygiene and prompt oral electrolyte treatment of affected calves, vaccine programmes dramatically reduce welfare impact.
