Progress in PRRS vaccine development offers hope for improved pig welfare globally, with new generation vaccines targeting the diverse strains responsible for ongoing disease burden.
Effective PRRS vaccination could prevent enormous suffering across millions of pigs annually. Current vaccines reduce but do not eliminate disease burden. New generation vaccines with broader strain coverage and better reproductive protection would substantially reduce the welfare toll of PRRS in commercial pig farming worldwide. Accelerating vaccine development and ensuring global access are key welfare priorities.
