Dog Whelping Welfare Management

Whelping welfare encompasses the physical and psychological needs of the bitchshe during parturition, with good management significantly affecting both dam and puppy welfare.

Key Facts

Normal canine labour lasts 6-12 hours but can extend to 24 hours in uncomplicated births
Dystocia (difficult birth) requiring veterinary intervention occurs in approximately 5% of whelping
Brachycephalic breeds have significantly higher dystocia rates due to puppy head size
Experienced supervision significantly improves puppy survival, especially in large litters
Stress during whelping is reduced by a familiar, quiet environment prepared in advance

Welfare Considerations

Whelping is physiologically and psychologically demanding. Bitches need a quiet, familiar environment where they feel secure to express natural nesting and birthing behaviour. Dystocia causes acute suffering if undetected and untreated. Planned caesarean sections in predisposed brachycephalic breeds prevent distress from prolonged obstructed labour. Post-whelping monitoring for retained placentas and mastitis protects dam welfare.

What You Can Do

Prepare a safe, quiet whelping environment before the due date
Monitor whelping closely but minimise unnecessary disturbance
Know the signs of dystocia and have emergency veterinary contact arranged
Support breed reform efforts that reduce brachycephalic dystocia rates
