Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a devastating viral disease causing severe suffering and high mortality without vaccination, with prevention being far more welfare-positive than treatment.
Parvovirus causes intense suffering: profuse bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, weakness, and painful abdominal cramping. Intensive supportive treatment requires hospitalisation, IV fluids, and antimicrobial therapy for multiple days. The contrast with the ease of prevention - a simple inexpensive vaccine - makes parvovirus vaccination one of the highest-value welfare interventions per pound spent. Community vaccination access programmes protect all dogs.
