Cattle Welfare Calf Iron Deficiency Prevention

Iron deficiency anaemia in veal and intensively managed calves causes significant welfare harm through weakness, pale mucous membranes, and reduced disease resistance.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Iron deficiency anaemia causes weakness, breathlessness on exertion, reduced immune function, and susceptibility to infection. In traditional veal systems, anaemia was deliberately induced for market reasons - causing serious welfare harm for cosmetic production purposes. UK welfare regulations prohibit this, but imported veal may come from systems with lower welfare standards. Calves with access to appropriate solid feed naturally maintain iron status without supplementation.
