Feline panleukopenia (FPV) is a highly contagious, potentially fatal parvoviral disease in cats, with vaccination being the most critical welfare protection for at-risk populations.
Panleukopenia causes severe suffering through haemorrhagic gastroenteritis, profound immunosuppression, and death. Kittens under 6 months are most severely affected, with mortality rates that can exceed 90% in unvaccinated populations. Vaccination is transformatively effective at preventing this suffering. In shelter and rescue contexts, appropriate vaccination at intake combined with isolation protocols represents essential welfare infrastructure.
