Body condition scoring (BCS) is a fundamental welfare monitoring tool for cattle that enables early detection of nutritional inadequacy, metabolic disease, and management problems.
Body condition reflects the integrated effect of feed intake, health status, and metabolic efficiency on body fat reserves. Thin cattle (BCS below 2) are suffering - whether from disease, competition, inadequate nutrition, or metabolic dysfunction. Regular monitoring detects deterioration early, enabling investigation of causes and targeted intervention before welfare is severely compromised. BCS monitoring is inexpensive, evidence-based, and highly informative about herd welfare.
