Farmed ducks have strong natural drives for water access, foraging, and social behaviour that are frequently frustrated in intensive production systems.
The denial of open water access to farmed ducks is one of the clearest examples of a species-specific welfare need being routinely unmet in commercial production. Ducks without bathing water cannot maintain eye health, feather condition, or perform natural comfort behaviours. Even simple interventions such as shower systems or shallow troughs represent meaningful improvements. Consumer demand for higher welfare duck products and legislative pressure for minimum water provisions are the most effective levers for change.
