Zero-grazing systems keep cattle permanently indoors with forage brought to them, affecting welfare in complex ways compared to pasture systems.
The welfare of cattle in zero-grazing systems depends heavily on management quality. When well-managed with good lying areas, enrichment, and social groups, welfare can be comparable to pasture systems. However, the permanent denial of grazing behaviour - a highly motivated activity in cattle - remains a significant concern. Stereotypies, aggression, and poor hoof health increase with poor management. Welfare assessments must evaluate both outcome measures (lameness, injuries, behaviour) and input measures (space, enrichment, stockperson quality).
