Lower urinary tract disease is among the most common cat welfare problems. Evidence-based prevention significantly reduces incidence and suffering.
Lower urinary tract disease in cats causes significant, often recurrent suffering. The welfare burden is particularly high because FIC frequently recurs and has a strong stress component - the same cats tend to suffer repeated episodes triggered by household changes. Prevention requires a whole-life approach: reducing inter-cat tension, increasing environmental enrichment, improving water intake through dietary changes, and identifying and managing stress triggers. Owners whose cats have experienced a FLUTD episode should receive prevention education to reduce the likelihood of recurrence rather than simply treating each episode reactively.
