Free-range is a meaningful improvement over battery cage egg production but is not a uniform welfare standard. Outdoor access is required but how many hens actually use it and how much space and vegetation quality the range provides varies enormously. Flocks with high stocking density inside the shed, limited pop holes, and poor range vegetation may have limited actual outdoor use.
