Aquaculture produces more seafood than wild capture fisheries but welfare standards lag behind terrestrial farming. Closing this gap is one of the most pressing challenges in global animal welfare.
Farmed fish represent the most numerous vertebrate animals raised by humans, yet they receive the least welfare regulation. The welfare challenges — crowding, water quality variation, parasites, and inhumane slaughter — are substantial but addressable. Progress is being made in salmon aquaculture through certification schemes and corporate commitments, but other farmed species including shrimp, carp, and tilapia have significantly weaker welfare frameworks. Consumer demand for welfare-certified aquaculture products is the primary driver of improvement.
