Flamingos are highly social wading birds whose welfare in captivity depends on flock size, water quality, and access to natural feeding behaviors.

Welfare Considerations

Captive flamingos need large mixed-sex flocks of at least 20 individuals, access to shallow water for filter feeding, and diets supplemented with carotenoids. Solitary housing or small groups cause chronic stress and abnormal repetitive behaviors. Poor water chemistry leads to feather dullness and immune suppression.
