Wild Whooper Swan Climate Welfare

Whooper swans winter in the UK from Icelandic breeding grounds, with climate change affecting both breeding success in Iceland and the availability of traditional UK wintering sites.

Key Facts

Over 20,000 whooper swans winter in the UK at traditional wetland and farmland sites
Warming Icelandic summers are affecting lemming and invertebrate prey timing for chick food
UK wintering sites are shifting northward as milder winters reduce southern site freezing
Whooper swans are faithful to traditional wintering sites and do not easily relocate
Feeding on agricultural crops compensates for reduced natural food but creates human conflict

Welfare Considerations

Whooper swan welfare is affected by climate change at both Icelandic breeding grounds and UK wintering sites. Maintaining traditional wintering sites through habitat management protects winter welfare.

What You Can Do

Support WWT and RSPB management of key whooper swan wintering sites
Record whooper swan arrival dates through citizen science
Report unusual swan behaviour or mortality to wildlife monitoring schemes
Donate to wildfowl conservation organisations managing wintering wetland habitats
