Wild Sparrowhawk Garden Welfare

Sparrowhawks are common garden predators of small birds, with welfare considerations for both the predator and its prey in the context of garden bird feeding.

Key Facts

Female sparrowhawks are significantly larger than males and hunt thrushes and starlings
Sparrowhawk predation at garden feeders is natural and should not be prevented
Providing dense shrub cover near feeders allows small birds to escape approaching sparrowhawks
Sparrowhawk populations recovered dramatically following DDT bans in the 1970s
Window strikes by sparrowhawks chasing prey are more common than from other species

Welfare Considerations

Sparrowhawk predation is a natural part of garden ecosystems. Providing escape cover reduces capture success without unnatural predator control, protecting small bird welfare while supporting a recovered raptor.

What You Can Do

Plant dense shrubs near garden feeders as escape cover for small birds
Apply window strikes prevention film to reduce sparrowhawk and small bird glass collisions
Accept natural predation as part of garden wildlife ecology
Report sparrowhawk sightings through BTO Garden BirdWatch monitoring
