Tilapia is one of the world's most farmed fish species. High-density intensive systems raise welfare concerns that the industry is beginning to address.
Tilapia at high stocking densities show chronic stress responses, increased aggression injuries, and reduced immune function. Given evidence of fish sentience, these physiological responses likely involve unpleasant subjective experience. Reduced stocking density and environmental enrichment improve welfare measurably.
