Access to water for bathing is a fundamental welfare need for ducks. Commercial duck production systems vary enormously in whether this need is met.
Ducks deprived of water access for bathing cannot perform preening behaviors essential for feather and eye health. This creates both physical welfare impacts (deteriorating plumage, eye irritation) and prevents satisfaction of one of the species' strongest behavioral motivations. Provision of bathing water is a fundamental welfare requirement.
