Nutritional anaemia in veal calves and growing cattle affects welfare through weakness and fatigue. Iron supplementation protects young stock.
Calves with iron-deficiency anaemia are weak, lethargic, and immunologically compromised. In some veal systems, anaemia is deliberately induced to keep meat pale - a practice that imposes animal suffering for aesthetic product reasons. Supplementation prevents suffering while enabling natural growth.
