The Five Domains model has replaced the older Five Freedoms as the leading scientific framework for understanding and assessing animal welfare across species.
The shift from Five Freedoms to Five Domains represents a scientific maturing of animal welfare thinking. Freedoms framed welfare negatively — as the absence of suffering. Domains incorporate positive experiences: pleasure, comfort, curiosity, playfulness, and satisfaction. This reframing is practically important: a welfare plan that only prevents suffering but provides no positive experiences falls short of modern standards. Good welfare means animals get to thrive, not just survive.
