Mammary tumours are the most common cancer in intact female dogs. Early spaying prevents most cases entirely.
Dogs developing mammary cancer suffer from tumour growth, metastasis, and in advanced cases, significant pain and deterioration. The primary prevention of mammary cancer through timely spaying prevents enormous cumulative suffering across the dog population. For dogs already developing tumours, early detection and wide surgical excision provides the best chance of cure.
