Supervision during farrowing significantly reduces piglet mortality and suffering. Systematic farrowing monitoring is a welfare priority.
Piglets crushed by their dam suffer acute trauma, while those that survive crushing may have internal injuries that affect their welfare. Supervision that allows repositioning of at-risk piglets, assistance with weak piglets accessing teats, and prompt intervention when the sow is restless prevents much of this mortality and associated suffering.
