Organic salmon certification addresses some welfare concerns but has significant gaps. Understanding what organic certification does and does not cover protects informed consumer choice.
Organic salmon certification provides meaningful welfare improvements in some areas - lower stocking density and prohibition of synthetic pesticides. However, gaps in pre-slaughter welfare, cleaner fish welfare, and disease management mean organic is not automatically the highest-welfare choice. Informed consumers need to understand these gaps to make meaningful purchasing decisions.
