Wild animal suffering is the largest unexplored frontier in animal welfare ethics. Understanding the scale and tractability of this challenge is essential for long-term welfare thinking.
Wild animal suffering may represent the largest source of animal suffering on Earth - vastly exceeding the scale of farmed animal suffering. Most wild animals live brief, painful lives. While direct intervention in wild animal suffering raises profound ethical and ecological questions, these challenges do not invalidate the moral consideration owed to wild animals. Long-term welfare thinking must engage with wild animal welfare as a serious priority.
