Surgical castration of piglets without anaesthesia causes significant pain. Evidence-based anaesthesia and analgesia protocols reduce this welfare harm.
Every piglet castrated without anaesthesia or analgesia experiences unnecessary acute pain. The procedures required to provide effective pain relief are simple and inexpensive relative to the welfare benefit. Policy requiring anaesthesia for castration, combined with industry adoption of immunocastration as an alternative, would eliminate this preventable welfare harm at the scale of hundreds of millions of pigs annually.
