Rainbow trout are the most widely farmed salmonid after Atlantic salmon, facing similar welfare challenges in intensive systems.
Rainbow trout share the capacity for suffering with Atlantic salmon and deserve equivalent welfare consideration. The intensive systems used for trout production often fail to meet their behavioural and physiological needs. Improved welfare standards for trout - particularly around slaughter - are urgently needed given the billions farmed annually.
