Tail docking of piglets is technically illegal across the EU but widely practised as a preventive measure against tail biting.
Tail docking involves tissue amputation without anaesthesia in young piglets. While done to prevent the often worse welfare outcome of tail biting, it represents a failure of the production system to meet pig needs. Phase-out is achievable - demonstrated in several countries - through addressing root causes including barren environments and overcrowding.
