Polar bears in captivity face significant welfare challenges due to their large natural ranges and specialist ecological adaptations.
Polar bears are specialist predators with enormous space requirements and complex behavioural needs that are extremely difficult to meet in captivity. Stereotypic pacing indicates chronic welfare compromise. Modern zoo facilities with large, complex environments including water access and diverse enrichment can improve welfare, but fundamental limitations remain.
