Heat stress in feedlot cattle causes significant welfare compromise and production losses, with climate change increasing the frequency and severity of heat events.
Heat stress causes physiological distress, altered behaviour, reduced feed intake, and in severe cases death. Climate change is making heat stress events more frequent and severe in many feedlot regions. Provision of shade, water, and ventilation are basic welfare requirements that remain inadequate in many commercial systems.
