Noise phobia particularly to fireworks is highly prevalent in dogs and causes acute suffering that is largely preventable through management.
Fireworks phobia causes acute psychological suffering in nearly half of all pet dogs during fireworks season. The suffering includes shaking, hiding, panting, and in extreme cases self-injury. Management combining environmental strategies, training, and when necessary medication can substantially reduce this suffering. Longer-term legislative changes to regulate public fireworks would benefit millions of animals.
