Antler velvet removal from farmed deer is a widespread practice with significant welfare implications that is subject to increasing scrutiny.
Velvet antler contains numerous sensory nerves and its removal causes acute pain. Deer show clear pain behaviours including escape attempts, vocalisation, and physiological stress indicators during the procedure. Without adequate anaesthesia, velvet removal imposes significant avoidable suffering. Mandatory anaesthesia should be a minimum welfare standard wherever deer farming occurs.
