More complex enrichment providing multiple sensory stimuli and challenges produces better welfare outcomes than single objects.
Enrichment research has advanced from simply asking whether any enrichment helps to understanding what characteristics make enrichment most effective. Complexity, novelty, and engagement are key. Providing a variety of enrichment types that meet different behavioural needs - rooting, chewing, social interaction, and exploration - delivers the best welfare outcomes for pigs across their range of individual preferences.
