Integrating welfare traits into commercial pig breeding programmes can achieve long-term improvements in pig welfare alongside production objectives.
Genetic selection has previously focused primarily on production traits, sometimes creating animals that perform well economically but have reduced welfare. Integrating welfare traits - leg strength, disease resistance, temperament, and mothering ability - into breeding objectives creates animals better suited to commercial conditions. This approach reduces welfare problems at their root rather than managing symptoms.
