Wild Common Lizard Garden Welfare

Common lizards are the UK's only native viviparous reptile and face welfare challenges from habitat fragmentation and cat predation.

Key Facts

Common lizards are legally protected from deliberate killing in the UK
They give birth to live young rather than laying eggs unlike most other lizards
South-facing rough grassland with log piles and stone areas provides essential basking habitat
Cat predation is a significant cause of mortality in garden populations
Garden lizards benefit from wildlife-friendly management including undisturbed log piles

Welfare Considerations

Common lizards require specific microhabitat features including sunny basking sites and refuge from predators. Garden cats pose a significant welfare threat to lizard populations. Creating wildlife-friendly gardens with rough grassland, log piles, and stone features provides essential habitat while reducing predation risk. Each garden that hosts a successful lizard population contributes to individual welfare and local population viability.

What You Can Do

Create log piles and stone areas in sunny garden areas for lizard basking
Keep cats indoors during peak lizard activity periods
Avoid using pesticides that reduce invertebrate prey for lizards
