Barn owls face critical welfare challenges in winter when harsh weather and prey scarcity combine to cause starvation and mortality.
Winter is the most welfare-challenging period for barn owls. Food shortage from prey hiding under snow, combined with energy demands of maintaining body temperature, can cause rapid starvation. Individual owls that cannot find prey die within days. Maintaining rough grassland prey habitats and providing safe roosting sites reduces winter mortality.
