Welfare of Farmed Trout

Rainbow trout is the most commonly farmed salmonid after Atlantic salmon, raised in raceways and net pens with welfare challenges distinct from but related to those of farmed salmon.

Welfare Considerations

Farmed trout welfare suffers from many of the same problems as salmon: high density causing aggression and injury, inadequate stunning before slaughter, and limited behavioral expression. Trout also face specific challenges from raceway culture, where water flow and limited space prevent normal spatial distribution. Electrical and percussive stunning before slaughter is available and increasingly required by retailers, but adoption is inconsistent.
