Cat Feline Boarding Holiday Stress Assessment

Assessing and managing cat stress during owner absence requires careful planning and appropriate care arrangements.

Key Facts

Cats are strongly territorial and prefer familiar environments during owner absence
Home visits by pet sitters cause less environmental disruption than cattery placement for many cats
Pheromone diffusers and familiar bedding reduce anxiety in cats away from home
Some cats show significant stress even in high-quality catteries with apparent paradoxical calm
Video monitoring of cats during owner absence reveals stress behaviors not visible during visits

Welfare Considerations

Cats experiencing boarding-related stress suffer from anxiety, reduced appetite, and immune suppression. Personalizing care arrangements to individual cat personality reduces preventable suffering.

What You Can Do

Assess your cat's personality and history to determine the best care arrangement during absence
Use pheromone products to reduce anxiety for cats in catteries or with home visitors
Start cat care arrangements early to allow acclimatization before extended absences
