Tortoises and freshwater turtles are popular pets whose welfare needs are routinely underestimated, leading to chronic illness and shortened lifespans.
Tortoise welfare failures are nearly always slow and invisible: metabolic bone disease progresses over months before causing visible symptoms; respiratory infections from inadequate temperature gradients worsen gradually; and dehydration is hard to detect externally. By the time owners notice something is wrong, irreversible damage has often occurred. Proper setup — UV-B lighting, basking gradient, humid hide, and correct diet — prevents virtually all common captive tortoise welfare failures.
