Wild Barn Swallow Summer Welfare

Summer welfare challenges for barn swallows include heat stress during breeding and declining aerial insect availability in increasingly hot conditions.

Key Facts

Heat waves during breeding season can cause nest abandonment and chick mortality
Adults must increase foraging distance when local insect availability declines in hot dry spells
Swallow chicks have limited thermoregulation ability and are vulnerable to heat in exposed nests
Open farm buildings provide shaded nest sites that protect chicks from direct summer sun
Nest site fidelity means swallows return to the same buildings even if conditions have deteriorated

Welfare Considerations

Swallow chicks in exposed or overheating nests suffer heat stress that reduces growth and survival. Climate change is increasing the frequency of heat waves that cause nest failure during critical breeding periods.

What You Can Do

Maintain access to open farm buildings that provide shaded nesting sites for swallows
Support climate action policies that reduce extreme summer heat events
Install shade structures near known swallow nest sites where buildings cannot provide shade
