Organic agriculture is often perceived as inherently higher-welfare, but the connection between organic certification and animal welfare is more complex than most consumers realize.
Organic certification addresses pesticide use, feed quality, and some production practices — but animal welfare is not a primary focus of organic standards. Organic poultry can be raised in very similar conditions to conventional flocks except for feed type. Refusing antibiotics to treat sick animals raises welfare concerns of its own. Consumers seeking welfare improvements should look for Certified Humane, Animal Welfare Approved, or GAP ratings alongside or instead of organic certification.
